  1. Faking It
    1. Stay grounded in your company’s mission, vision, and values and be deliberate about how you speak and what you say.
    2. Audit your team and trusted colleagues for feedback and develop an executive brand profile for key spokespeople.
  2. Oversharing
    1. Do not fill up silence, but know your message, stick to the truth, and deliver it.
    2. Remember your role when interacting with reporters and define the rules of engagement.
  3. Answering the Questions
    1. The goal of an interview is to deliver your message, not answer questions.
    2. Limit yourself to your top messages, but prepare for tough questions.
    3. Practice blocking (acknowledge and briefly answer the question) and bridging (transition to the message you want to deliver) and avoiding the negative or being intentionally obtuse.
  4. Forgetting Your Number One
    1. Make sure your message or story resonates with people on the inside (i.e., your employees) first.
    2. Go deeper on internal communications by leaving it to the pros, reading all about it, and finding micro-moments to connect.
