There is no single definition for the responsibilities of a product manager and that product management roles differ meaningfully across companies depending on the product culture, which informs how a product manager spends their time, how decisions are made, and the strengths and weaknesses of their product development.

Four product cultures that dominate tech companies in Silicon Valley

  • Engineering-Driven
    • Starts with a unique technical insight that becomes the basis for their products. e.g. Google, Microsoft, and Dropbox.
  • Data-Driven
    • Thrives off of the insights they can derive from product metrics. e.g. Zynga, Facebook, LinkedIn, and PayPal
  • Design-Driven
    • Obsesses over every detail of the user experience. e.g. Apple, Airbnb, and Snapchat.
  • Sales-Driven
    • Thrives off the insights garnered through the sales and customer success process. e.g. Salesforce, Workday, Marketo, and Oracle
